Some exceptions to these rules apply. People didn’t really care for male servers drawing something cute on the checks, and African Americans were apt to tip less if the server touched them. If your server is doing anything that makes you uncomfortable, you do have the freedom to adjust your tip, but it will be viewed unkindly. If you’re with a group, you may be stuck with an 18 percent gratuity added by the management. Like upscale restaurants, groups are expected to tip a higher percentage.

Whether you care what Emily Post has to say about etiquette or not, bear in mind next time you leave a tip that it may very well be your server’s only wage, which she probably has to share with other people. Even “cheaper” restaurant servers usually have to “tip out” the table bussers, host, or somebody, and very rarely get to keep all their tips.
